CATCHING A COLD? GRAB A DRINK. AND ANOTHER, AND ANOTHER, AND ANOTHER…

Two days ago I started feeling a bit weird, my head was aching and my throat started to feel suspiciously sore. The whole family that I live with had just been sick and a couple of my friends as well, but since I very rarely get sick this still came as a not so appreciated surprise to me. I quickly decided I was not going to let the cold win and started drinking shots of apple cider vinegar to kill the germs as well as a teaspoon of raw honey. When I spoke to Sarah (my health guru hehe) the next morning she quickly advised me to flush out the germs by drinking 4 litres of lemon water and only juices for lunch. Hm.. Me? Who already run to pee every ten minutes because of the amounts I drink at the gym – 4 freakin litres?! Well, I’ll give it a go, I thought. The hardest part would be not to eat a real meal, not to chew, and not to get hungry or hangry while doing it. But okay, I agreed to that as well.

The day went by and I drank my water and by 4 pm I was still not hungry, and I had only had breakfast that morning. What the fuck? Well, I drank my homemade coldpressed juice consisting of beetroot, carrots, apple and lemon. Yum! By dinner time I was still not overly hungry but happy to get to chew a warm meal just for the enjoyment. I didn’t have my regular afternoon coffee either and still stayed awake so this itself was a bit of an accomplishment. 

Anyways, since I saw what I was able to do, keeping full on pretty much just water and still having lots of energy, I actually agreed to try out step two that Sarah was advising me to do – So this morning I swapped my beloved huge bowl of porridge with peanutbutter and apple for a green banana kale smoothie. I swapped my two cups of coffee for two litres of lemon water and then headed to the gym for a lighter legworkout. No coffee in the morning was a struggle mentally… But I managed! Sure it felt a bit strange not having the same “fullness” to work with that I’m used to, but strenght wise I can’t say I noticed any difference, and I thought I would have felt a lot weaker. 

So today I have had 4 litres of water, a green smoothie, half the size of my regular porridge (post workout), a bowl of fruits and nuts and soon I’m having a real dinner. I’m not gonna lie, right now I am super hungry and will enjoy every bite of my hot meal but I have managed all day to go satisfied and without cravings. This is all because of the difference in how much water I’m drinking now. Most people probably go around dehydrated without knowing it, and eat food instead of drinking water to try to satisfy the need. Try drinking 3-4 litres of water throughout the day, and half of it before you eat anything else in the morning. It really does make a difference and I will definitely get better with this, even though I probably won’t go as extreme with everything else since I still love my food routines. Maybe I just won’t have to eat as much to feel full in the future. Love learning these things.
